Accepted materials include all types of batteries: rechargeable batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and other small alkaline batteries found in typical office equipment and supplies, nickel-cadmium, lead and lithium batteries. All batteries may be recycled through Building Service’s electronics recycling where we will sort them accordingly upon receipt.
NIU benefits from recycling lead batteries, while it costs to recycle alkaline batteries.
Household Batteries are recycled through campus mail
Cover the ends of each battery with tape to prevent accidental discharge
Mail in any intercampus and address to “Campus mail" or "Recycle”
James Gable Chemical Safety Officer of the Environmental Health and Safety Department is responsible for properly disposing of all batteries.
NIU utilizes several battery recyclers including RZimmerman, Inc. and Dimco of DeKalb, RBRC and Inmetco of PA. depending on the chemical make-up of battery recycled.
