Recycling Programs - Batteries

Battery Recycling
- Accepted materials include all types of batteries: rechargeable batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and other small alkaline batteries found in typical office equipment and supplies, nickel-cadmium, lead and lithium batteries. All batteries may be recycled through Building Service’s electronics recycling where we will sort them accordingly upon receipt.
- NIU benefits from recycling lead batteries, while it costs to recycle alkaline batteries.
- Household Batteries are recycled through campus mail
- Cover the ends of each battery with tape to prevent accidental discharge
- Mail in designated battery envelope or any envelope addressed to “Campus mail/Recycle” or call Building Services Recycling at 753-1155 for pick-up.
- James Gable Chemical Safety Officer of the Environmental Health and Safety Department is responsible for properly disposing of batteries.
- Contact Campus Mail Services at 753-1183 to request envelopes or simply place them in a manila envelope addressed to Campus Mail/Recycling.
- NIU utilizes several battery recyclers including RZimmerman, Inc. and Dimco of DeKalb, RBRC and Inmetco of PA. depending on the chemical make-up of battery recycled.
