In an effort to reward faculty members who have successfully integrated
instruction and technology, the first annual Academy Awards for NIU Web
pages were given Wednesday. The awards stem from the Technology for Academic
Productivity Seminars that have taken place for the last four or five years,
said Michael Prais, Academic Computing Services director.
"We thought this would be a nice way to get people's attention
and commend individuals for doing a good job," Prais said. The awards
were given at a ceremony in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium. However, the room
was nowhere close to full.
"I would have liked to have seen more people. I think part of it is
not everybody is interested in technology and coming down to hear about
technology," Prais said. "As NIU does more with technology, we
expect to see more people down here."
The nominations for Web pages began in early March. TAPS received between
50 and 60 nominations, which were then forwarded to 22 judges to be narrowed
down into 11 categories. |

The
remaining Web pages were entered in a category called the Best of the Rest,
Prais said. The voting was then opened once again to NIU students and faculty
from March 11 to Monday.
The Northern Star won the award for Best NIU Web Page for a student organization.
Star Online Editor Alan Porterfield said several changes were made to the
Web page over the past year, which may have helped the Star secure the title.
"We simplified the page in such a way because last year we used frames
on our site," Porterfield said. "Not every Web browser that people
use has frames." Also, all the links for each newspaper were directed
to a standard links page, Porterfield said. "We can add new links ...
and no matter what issue that person is on, they'll be able to get to
it," he said.
Prais said the awards ceremony is something TAPS plans to continue. . |
