
Outdoor Gear Rental Policies
Identification
- A current NIU OneCard must be presented at the time of equipment rental to receive the student, faculty/staff, or alumni rental rate.
- A maximum of three pieces of the same equipment (i.e., 3 pairs of skates, 3 softballs, etc.) may be rented per ID.
Deposits and Damages
- For security purposes, a deposit is required by faculty/staff and community members at the time of equipment rental.
- When academic classes are not in session or equipment is due after the last week of classes, students must also provide a security deposit. During academic sessions students are not required to provide a deposit; however, unreturned or damaged equiment will be billed to the student's Bursar account.
- It is the renter's responsibility to determine whether the equipment is complete and/or in good working condition upon checkout.
- Lost equipment will be charged at the current replacement cost for the piece of equipment.
- The Assistant Director for Outdoor Adventures will determine charges to repair damaged equipment.
Fees
- All late fees, and the costs of repairing or replacing damaged equipment, are the responsibility of the renter. A late fee will be charged to any person not returning equipment on or before the due date.
- For items returned dirty or wet, an $8 fee for equipment valued less than $100 and a $15 fee for equipment valued more than $100 is assessed.
Renewals
- Equipment cannot be renewed over the phone. For renewals, all items must be brought into the Outing Centre for processing.
Returning Equipment
- All rental tents must be set up upon checkout. Allow 1/2 hour for each tent to ensure tents are in acceptable condition.
- Upon return of tents, the renter must set up each tent completely for damage asssessment. All tents must be returned clean, dry and complete. Tents must be folded/rolled and re-packed by the renter.
