Water Fitness

A non-impact cardiovascular fitness and strength class in shallow water.  Non-swimmers welcome.  Lifeguard on duty.

FitPass required for participation.  Participants can purchase any of the FitPasses available for land group fitness classes or a Water Only FitPass.  FitPasses allow drop-in participation in any/all of the water fitness classes.  Bring your FitPass and NIU OneCard to the pool for admittance to the class.

Adult Private Swimming Lessons

Work one-on-one with an instructor to improve any/all personal swimming skills.  Lessons are by appointment and taught in Gabel Hall Pool.  Register at the Student Recreation Center or call 815-753-0231 for more information.

Child Swimming Lessons

Small group swimming lessons for children with skills ranging from water adjustment to stroke refinement.  Register at the Student Recreation Center or call 815-753-0231 for more information.

Level 1 & 2:  Saturday 10:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Level 3 & 4:  Saturday 10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Which level is for your child?
Level 1:  Water exploration.  Students will become comfortable in the water and learn elementary water skills.
Level 2:  Primary skills.  Students will gain success with fundamental skills and learning to float.  Basic self-help rescue skills will also be taught.
Level 3:  Stroke readiness.  The fundamentals of treading water, backstroke, front and back crawl will be introduced.
Level 4:  Stroke development.  Continued improvment and confidence in strokes previously learned will be emphasized.  Breaststroke, sidestroke and wall turns will be introduced.
Level 5:  Stroke refinement.  Instruction will include the refinement of key strokes.  The butterfly, open turns and feet-first surface dives will be introduced.  Students will work on increasing swim distances.
Level 6:  Skill proficiency.  Students will polish strokes to assist with ease in swimming, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances.


Adult Stroke Clinic

Already know how to swim?  Want to learn more to be able to swim for fitness?  Instructors will help participants refine movements, strokes, and form in the water for improved swimming skills.  Register at the Student Recreation Center or call 815-753-0231 for more information.

Lifeguard Certification Course

Become a certified lifeguard through the American Red Cross.  A certified instructor will teach guarding, first aid, CPR, and AED in this 6-week course.  Register at the Student Recreation Center or call 815-753-0231 for more information.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

Renew a current certification before it expires!  A certified instructor from the American Red Cross will teach an 8-hour short-course to review skills and renew a certification for experienced guards.   Register at the Student Recreation Center or call 815-753-0231 for more information.
