Sample Paper Excerpt

The authors conducted an experiment with one control group and 3 different levels of a treatment effect. The results were summarized by reporting that the overall F-statistic was significant at a level below .05. Furthermore, when each treatment mean was compared to the control group using a t-test, each treatment effect was significant at a level below .05. The principal investigator felt this was adequate evidence to demonstrate an effect. The co-principal investigator felt the t-tests should be replaced with tests of specific contrasts comparing each level to the control group and p-values should be adjusted for multiple comparisons from the same experiment.
