A physician with clinical experience in treating trigeminal neuralgia collaborates with a medical researcher to develop a more effective intervention. The physician conducted a clinical trial in his hospital to determine whether a new medication regimen would be better than a conventional treatment. The physician hired a staff member, who knew how to use statistical packages, to run some statistical analysis of the data to address the issue.

The p-value associated with the treatment effect was 0.063 indicating no statistically significant difference between the new medication regimen and the placebo at the nominal significance level a =0.05.

In order to show the difference between the experimental drug and the placebo, the physician decided to use (alpha) a =0.1 and then reported that the new medication regimen was better than placebo.
