Opportunities for Businesses

The Rockford Area Aerospace Accelerator Project, funded by the Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge grant, provides a wealth of opportunities for local businesses and emerging entrepreneurs to obtain consultation, on-site engineering assistance, strategic planning and a variety of services.  The College of Engineering and Engineering Technology’s Engineer in Residence program, offered throughout the region to partner companies, provides a unique opportunity for aerospace companies to work with students on special projects.

Engineer in Residence

Students from the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, under faculty supervision, are assigned as on-site research, development, test, and evaluation engineers with Rockford Area Aerospace Network (RAAN) member companies. This includes, but is not limited to, lean manufacturing, six sigma, process optimization to reduce labor costs, and manufacturing processes for designers.

Engineer in Residence projects are ideally completed in about three months. Each project must address transfer of pre-competitive technology within the Rockford area aerospace manufacturing base or its commercial manufacturing base. Project results will be documented in a final technical report.
