The diversity of local government organizational structures is matched by the diversity of the communities and environments in which they operate.  Differences in the administrative challenges that local governments face are often based on the composition of the community that they serve.  Likewise the skills and competencies that are required of governmental managers may differ depending on the size and demographics of their community’s population.

This colloquium will introduce students to the variety of challenges that will face them once they enter the workforce.  The knowledge they gain will not only enhance their academic understanding, it will provide essential information to assist them in determining where they want to start their careers and how best to position themselves.

Dr. Greg Streib, an alumnus of Northern Illinois University, is a Professor of Public Management and Policy at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Georgia State University.  Dr. Streib has conducted research and taught courses relating to local government management and the leadership.  He is widely published in the top academic journals in his field, including Public Administration Review, Administration and Society, and Public Productivity and Management Review. He has also worked with a number of governments and nonprofits to address issues ranging from welfare reform to leadership assessment.  Currently Dr. Streib is working with a dataset that includes information on the skills and competencies that city managers feel are essential to their profession.
