Resources for Graduate Certificate in Public Management Students

Graduate Certificate in Public Management (GCPM) Students: These students are classified by the University as "Students-at-Large" completing fifteen hours of course work toward a Certificate in Public Management. The student must have experience working in a mid-level or upper level management position in the public or nonprofit sector.  GCPM Students are usually those who have been out of school for a number of years and are trying to decide whether or not to pursue an advanced degree.

Upon completion of the Certificate, the fifteen hours of credit earned may be applied towards a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) degree with the advice and approval of the Division Chair.  The student may apply for the MPA program as a Mid-career Student. 

A student’s program of study must be reviewed and approved by the Division Director and the MPA Coordinator. Students will be required to complete 15 credit hours of course work.

PSPA 600 Scope and Dynamics of Public Administration 3
PSPA 605 Organization Theory and Behavior 3
PSPA 607 Performance Management 1: Theory & Management 3
PSPA 608 Performance Management 2: Management & Data Analysis 3
PSPA 609 Human Resources Management in Public Service Organizations 3
PSPA 610 Public Budgeting and Financial Management 3
PSPA 611 Public Revenue Analysis & Financial Management 3
PSPA 612 Information Technology in Public Service Organizations 3

Course work from the following (0-6)

Other 600-level PSPA courses with the exception of PSPA 661, PSPA 671, PSPA 692, PSPA 695, and PSPA 699. (Please click HERE for full course details)

A maximum of three semester hours earned in another department or program may be applied toward the certificate with the consent of the Division Director or the Assistant to the Chair.

To apply to the GCPM program, please first complete an application.  The application also includes a link to submit a second application to the NIU Graduate School as a Student at Large.  Please complete that process as well.  Where the Graduate School does NOT require a transcript for admittance, the Division of Public Administration requires an unofficial transcript from any institutions you may have attended in the past.
