In addition to upholding the quality of its programs and curriculum, each academic department is responsible for collecting data on student learning outcomes, with the intension of measuring the effectiveness of the teaching curriculum. The Office of Assessment Services (OAS) coordinates a range of assessment activities across campus and reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Development. NIU’s University Assessment Plan requires that each academic program and unit throughout the university has an approved and operational assessment plan. At the completion of every academic year, each program will submit an Annual Update Report to track the implementation and outcomes of its assessment plan. At the department level, it is the chair’s responsibility to ensure that assessment data is collected by the appropriate faculty committee and the report is submitted on time.
