Commencement FAQs for Students

Q.  Should I go to the university commencement AND the department commencement?
A.  Students are welcome to attend either, or both, commencements.  

Q.  How long does the department commencement last?
A.  We begin promptly at 2 p.m. and end between 3-3:15 p.m.

Q.  If I go to the university commencement, can I keep my cap and gown for the departmentment ceremony?
A.  Yes.  WE RETURN ALL CAPS AND GOWNS FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE DEPARTMENT CEREMONY.

Q.  Do I get my diploma at the department ceremony?
A.  No.  You will receive a certificate acknowledging your graduation.  Certificates are also given to Pi Sigma Alpha initiates, honor students, award winners, students of distinction, political science scholars, and other honorees.

Q.  How long is the reception and do I have to stay for it?
A.  There's no set time limit.  Leave immediately after the ceremony, or stay awhile to visit,  take photographs and enjoy some light refreshments.

Q.  How many tickets can I get for the department commencement? 
A.  Tickets are not given, but you must register.  Seating is unlimited, so bring as many guests as you wish.
