I. General Political Science Announcements 

a. Pi Sigma Alpha Membership

The Department of Political Science will recognize political science majors who meet the criteria for Pi Sigmas Alpha national honorary society membership at the spring department commencement.  

Qualifications for membership:

  • Overall academic standing in the upper third of graduating seniors in the College of Liberal Aarts and Sciences
  • Grade of "B" or "A" in all political science courses
  • 18 or more hours in political science courses, including at least 12 hours from NIU and at least one course not open to students in the first two years of collegiate work

b. "Miss Representation" 

  • "Miss Representation" Film Screening & Discussion
  • Thursday, February 9
  • Begins at 6:00 p.m.
  • Reavis Hall, Room 211 
  • This popular documentary examines images of women in the media, as well as the media's inadequate representation of women in positions of power. Assistant Professor of Political Science Rebecca Hannagan will help lead a discussion after the film. Snacks will be provided at the event.Sponsor: Women's Studies Program.

    Career Fair Preparation Workshop, 2/13, 4:30-6 p.m., Campus Life Building, Room 100 - PepsiCo, Frito-Lay will present best ways to approach employers

    ABC's of Getting an Internship Workshop, 2/16, 5-7 p.m., HSC, Capitol Room - Employer panelists from various industries will share tips on how to present yourself to employers, what they are looking for in intern candidates, and talk about their internship programs.  Sponsored by Kohl's with Susan Caplan, author of Marketing Yourself to the Real World (Free books to the first 125 students).

    d. Celebrate International Women's Day with Luncheon and Talk

    On Wednesday, March 7, 11:30 in the Chandelier Room, NIU presents lunch and a talk by Dr. Kurt Thurmaier, Director, Public Administration at NIU.  The topic is "Kidogo, Kidogo: Patiently Investing in Girls' Education".  The event is co-sponsored by Women's Studies, Division of International Programs, and Zeta Gammer Chapter of Phi Beta Delta.  Luncheon is $15.  Contact prosenberg@niu.edu (815-753-9530) by Feb. 27 for reservations.  View flyer with details.

    Interested in a paid internship with the Illinois State Legislature?  Earn a monthly stipend including student health insurance, 8 graduate credits and work as legislative staff with the partisan staffs of either the IL General Assembly or the Legislative Research Unit.     VI. Scholarship and Fellowships


    a. Call for Papers: Political Science Undergraduate Paper Competition - 3/12/12

    The Department of Political Science will recognize, on an annual basis, outstanding papers written in conjunction wtih 300-400 level political science courses or directed studies.  Authors do not have to be political science majors or have a particular class standing.  Winners receive a certificate and $100 tuition credit at the spring department commencement.

    DEADLINE:  Papers may be submitted by students or faculty to the undergraduate secretary in Zulauf 415 no later than 4:30 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2012.

    Submittal requirements:

    • Papers must be submitted in triplicate
    • All copies require two cover pages: one with student's name and one without student's name
    • Students name may not be listed in headers or footers
    • Only papers written during the previous calendar year are considered for the award.  However, papers completed in the current spring semester are eligible for the following year's competition, even if the student has graduated.
    • There are no requirements concerning length of paper

    b. Kevin McKeough Award - 3/12/12

    The Department of Political Science is now accepting applications for the Kevin McKeough Award for outstanding nparticipation in the political process by a graduating senior at NIU.  This award is given annually to the political science major or minor who has made an outstanding contribution to the political process while at NIU through work in olitical campaigns, interest group activity, or election to public office.

    DEADLINE:  4:30 p.m., Monday, March 12, 2012.

    c. Department of Political Science Engaged Learning Scholarship - 4/5/12

    We are pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship which will benefit 6 recipients in the amount of $500 each to help defray the costs associated with engaged learning opportunities (study abroad, internships, independent studies).  DEADLINE: Thursday, April 5, 2012, 4:30 p.m. Details and application here.

    b. NEW Leadership Illinois: An all-expenses paid leadership program for college women

    All-expenses paid, bi-partisan program that strives to educate and empower the next generation of female leaders.  Leadership education, hands-on training in public policy, and networking with leaders from every level of government.
