NIU’s Model United Nations Club, sponsored by the Political Science Department, recently attended the 49th annual Midwest Model United Nations Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. Twelve students from different departments and colleges across NIU, along with faculty adviser Professor Andrea Radasanu, represented the delegation of Indonesia. Students participated avidly in four days of intense diplomatic wrangling, representing the Club, Department and the University – and Indonesia! – admirably. As a result of the students’ high level of preparation and excellent performance at the conference, NIU’s delegation was recognized with three awards at the closing ceremonies. John Weidl, Indonesia’s representative to the Economic and Social Council, received an honorable mention for his excellent work, as did Eric Boetje and Jake Enders for their remarkably fine portrayal of Indonesia in the General Assembly’s Second Committee, which deals with international economy and development. Finally, Shehzad Merchant, NIU Model UN president and Indonesia’s representative on Security Council, won the most coveted award at the conference: best delegate on Security Council. Congratulations to NIU’s Model UN Club for a job well done.
