Building Maintenance
The Building Maintenance Department is responsible for the repair, maintenance and remodeling of buildings at the Northern Illinois University main campus. This area also provides services when requested by the Taft campus, the Hoffman Estates campus, and the Rockford Center campus. The Building Maintenance department provides the following services:
Carpenter Shop
The Carpenter shop provides carpentry services including the following services:
- repair and replacement of doors and door locks
- repair and replacement of windows, glass and screens
- repair, replacement, and installation of ceiling and floor tile
- repair, constructing and assembling of furniture (including lock repairs)
- mirror installation and replacement
- general carpentry maintenance services
- repair of miscellaneous equipment
- installation of signs
- services for special events
- remodeling
- special projects
Electrical Shop
The Electrical shop provides electrical services including the following services:
- repair and maintenance of all campus electricity distribution systems including transformers, substations, high-voltage lines, and emergency lighting and power systems.
- repair and maintenance of security systems and fire alarms
- repair and maintenance of outdoor and internal lighting (including replacement of light bulbs for light fixtures on ceilings over 8 feet in height)
- installation, repair and maintenance of building automation systems
- repair and maintenance of food service equipment
- repair of miscellaneous equipment
- repair and replacement of clocks
- services for special events
- preventative maintenance
- remodeling
Elevator Repair
The Elevator Repair shop provides the following services:
- repair and maintenance of passenger elevators
- repair and maintenance of freight elevators
- repair and maintenance of escalators
- repair and maintenance of dumb waiters
- repair and maintenance of stage lifts
- repair and maintenance of handicap chair lifts
- remodeling
Key Control Shop
The Key Control shop provides the following services:
- issuing of keys
- creation of new cores and keys
- recore, recombinate, replace and repair cores
- replacement of lost and damaged keys
- picking locks and unlocking of file cabinets
- recombinate and fix safes
- maintenance of computer program to ensure key combinations are not duplicated throughout NIU
Mason Shop
The Mason shop provides masonry services including the following services:
- repair and maintenance of sidewalks and other concrete areas
- repair and maintenance of wall and floor ceramic tile
- repair and maintenance of plaster
- tuckpointing
- repair and maintenance of brick and stone
- remodeling
Painters Shop
The Painters shop provides the following services:
- painting of offices, dorms rooms, hallways, etc.
- staining of doors, door frames, etc.
- remodeling
Plumbing Shop
The Plumbing shop is composed of plumbers, pipefitters and pipefitter/welders and provides services which include the following:
- repair and maintenance of pipe and valve leaks
- repair and maintenance of sinks and toilets
- repair and maintenance of the steam, water distribution systems, compressed air, and sewer systems including storm water
- preventative maintenance services to ensure that the steam which is generated by the Heating Plant is effectively and efficiently routed to all buildings
- Services to protect the public potable water supply served by the DeKalb Water Department from the possibility of contamination or pollution. This includes isolating within its customer's internal distribution system such contaminants or pollutants which could back flow or back-siphon into the public water system.

Refrigeration Shop
The Refrigeration shop provides services which include the following:
- repair and maintenance of all air conditioning equipment
- repair and maintenance of freezers, refrigerators
- repair and maintenance of ice machines
- repair and maintenance of food service equipment
- repair and maintenance of chemical storage equipment, environmental chambers, incubators, and other miscellaneous refrigeration equipment
