Applying for Admission to the M.A. ProgramTo apply for admission to NIU’s M.A. program in philosophy, you must complete the Application for Admission and have GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and transcripts sent to: The Graduate School Please note that it is highly recommended that you ensure that your application is complete by February 1 in order to be considered for fall admission. In addition, applicants for admission must submit a sample of their philosophical writing. This writing sample is required by the Department of Philosophy, not by the Graduate School, so the writing sample should be sent directly to the department. Do not send a hard copy of your writing sample. Please send your writing sample as an email attachment to philosophy@niu.edu. Title the attached file with your name and the words "writing sample." Applicants should not regard their applications as complete without the sample, even if the Graduate School has informed them that all requirements have been met. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials have been received by the Graduate School. If you have reason to believe that your application may not be complete, please call one of the following numbers to speak with the Graduate School admissions officer responsible for your file. Please do not call the Philosophy Department, since your Graduate School admissions officer has the most up-to-date information about your application.
Applying for a Graduate AssistantshipIf you wish to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship, you must complete and submit an Application for a Graduate Assistantship (form below). In order to receive full consideration for a Graduate Assistantship, you should ensure that your application for admission is complete and the Application for a Graduate Assistantship form is submitted by February 1. The department is typically able to offer six Graduate Assistantships to each incoming class. The Graduate Assistantships pay full tuition and a stipend, which was $10,300 for the 2007-2008 academic year. The department also has a very small number of tuition waivers, which can be awarded to members of each incoming class. Information about non-departmental forms of financial assistance can be found by consulting The Graduate School website.
