AADR report – Karen Baker reported that AADR is no longer conducting this group. It is now an advisory board to AADR – Affirmative Action Diversity Committee. They will meet monthly and will this year be chaired by Margie Cook, vice-chair Jennifer Montag. This group will discuss affirmative action issues, not complaints, and provide advise to the AADR office regarding those issues hopefully before they become policy or law. Amy Levin will no longer be able to represent the PCSW on this committee because of scheduling conflicts. Monique Bernoudy volunteered to represent us in this capacity. Thank you Monique.
Campus climate and quality of life sub-committee – Amy Levin reported that last year the PCSW met with the Secretarial Advisory Council to discuss concerns of the NIU secretaries. A campus climate survey was suggested at that time to address some of these issues but has not been approved as yet. One combined effort by several interested committees to compile an overall campus climate survey rather than several surveys being created by each would be the preferred method of PCSW members.
Personal Professional Development sub-committee –Julie Robertson’s report was given by Rhonda Robertson in her absence. Julie is unable to attend most of the meetings this semester because of office hour conflicts. She did volunteer to continue to Chair the subcommittee. She scheduled two networking luncheons for September and October over the summer. And will be working with her subcommittee to set up one for November. Joan Quinn in the Chandelier Room has help to schedule the Chandelier Room for the luncheons. Spring scheduling will begin soon.
September 28 is the first luncheon: Lesley Rigg and David Goldblum will be presenting "Living and working environmentally: One family at a time". Encourage your colleagues to attend!
October 19 is the second luncheon: Tanuja Singh, Chair and Professor, Department of Marketing will be presenting on cross-cultural competencies and communication. Mark your calendars to attend this one.
Fliers have been redesigned as suggested by members and the mailing list expanded to include secretaries in all departments.
Research sub-committee – Permission has not been granted by the president’s office to release the NIU Status of Women report sent to President Peters last February. Rhonda Robinson has gotten notification from Dr. Tom Krepel indicating that after the September 27th State of the University Address is given the PCSW will be able to discuss the release of the report with him. There was also reference to the data. The report is being sent to Steve Cunningham and Provost Raymond Alden for review.
Awards and recognition sub-committee – Deadlines have been set and all on-line forms up-dated for the Outstanding Student Awards, Wilma D. Stricklin Award, and Martha Cooper Journalism Award. We are also in the process of notifications to be sent out for the OSA and Stricklin Awards. We will also soon begin a campaign in the Communication/Journalism, English, Women’s Studies and Student Association to notify students of the Martha Cooper Journalism Award encouraging them to publish articles appropriate to submit for the award next spring.
As for the Women Who Make a Difference Award and the Outstanding Mentor Award the committee would like in-put from the PCSW members as to how they would like to proceed. Since last year these awards where presented without a search a protocol needs to be set in place. Please come prepared to discuss options at the October meeting. Information on these awards will be made available for that meeting.
New Business:
After hearing each of the sub-committee reports members where asked to decide which committee/s they would like to serve on. A sign-up sheet was passed. Those who are not on at least one committee will be contacted or assigned to a sub-committee.
For those of you who are not aware over the summer over the summer (August 7, 2007) Wilma D. Stricklin passed away at the age of 81. Wilma mentored many of NIU’s early women administrators and was very accomplished and her many contributions have made Northern what it is today. Flowers were sent from the PCSW, Women’s Studies Program and Women’s Resource Center. For several years PCSW has had an award named for Wilma. Many of the past recipients of this award made contributions to the Mother’s Memorial Fund in Wilma’s name as memorial. It was suggested that having a Networking Luncheon early in the Spring, possibly January or February, on Wilma Stricklin’s contributions at NIU would have a two-fold effect. It would honor Wilma’s memory and possibly urge individuals to nominate someone for the Wilma D. Stricklin Award before the deadline March 1st. Amy Levin will contact Julie Robertson regarding this matter. If anyone else has any other ideas please contact Rhonda Robinson to have it placed on the agenda.
Amy Levin suggested that the PCSW focus on Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as one of our concerns in all of our activities this year. We have already broached the topic in our report on the Status of NIU Women to President Peters. We have several members in those fields as members of the commission and this would be an opportune time to explore those issues. There is also a sizeable NSF Grant being written that would enjoy being supported by the PCSW. Members where encouraged to give this thought and it will be brought back as an agenda item in October.
The Women’s Studies Program has once again requested the support of the PCSW for Women’s History Month 2008 in the form of up to $850 for the design and printing of the Women’s History Month Poster. The theme this year will be "Enterprising Women." The programs and activities will examine the many ways in which enterprising women get things done, break new ground, and make changes. The poster funding is divided as $300 to commission a student to create an original design for the poster and $550 for the cost of printing. Lesley Rigg made a motion to approve the request and Josephine Umoren seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.
