President Commission on the Status of Women

Minutes:  March 9, 2005

Present:   Karen Baker, Barbara Burrell, Virginia Cassidy, Sally Conklin, Deborah Haliczer, Kathy Hotelling, Sharon Howard, Glenda Jones, Amy Levin, Carol Patch, Jan Rintala, , Julie Robertson, Lise Schlosser, Denise Schoenbachler, Lorraine Scurti, Leslie Simmons, Josephine Umoren,.

Absent:  Stacy Allie, Joanne Dempsey, Valerie Guyant, Lorraine Scutri, Randi Wolfe.

The meeting was called to order at 1:28 p.m. by Chair Barbara Burrell in Lowden Hall 304. Jan Rintala made a motion to approve the minutes from the February 9, 2005 meeting and Virginia Cassidy seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously.

Old Business:

Campus Climate and Quality of Life: The committee held a meeting by E-mail, no new topics were identified.Personal and Professional Development: Approximately 25 individuals attended the February Networking Luncheon. The next one is scheduled April 8th with Jenny Hoobler as the speaker.

Research: The committee is still compiling results and will have more complete data soon.

Awards and Recognition: The selection committee for the Outstanding Women Student Awards has been chosen. There are 103 applications this year. The selection will take place March 25th. At this time there is only one official Stricklin nomination. Volunteers for the Stricklin selection committee include: Stacy Allie, Joanne Dempsey, Deborah Haliczer, Kathy Hotelling, Sharon Howard, Carol Patch, Deborrah Pettit, Jan Rintala, and Denise Schoenbachler. Lois Self will be contacted about arranging judging for the Martha Cooper Journalism Award again this year.

Salary Equity Task Force: Reports that the Extension of the Tenure Probationary Period Policy (Stop the Tenure Clock) is now official. It has taken many years of hard work on the part of many individuals. The Commission would like to recognize the efforts of William "Bill" Minor in achieving this goal. It doesn’t look good for the fitness release issue but the task force will continue to pursue its progress. Benefits for domestic partners will also continue to be monitored.

Affirmative Action Diversity Resources Report (AADR): No report.

New Business:

Next years officers will be elected at the May meeting. Virginia Cassidy and Barbara Burrell will be forming the nomination committee this year.

Announcements:

  • Mediation Program (information sessions) are now scheduled through Human Resources.
  • Non-Discrimination Policy has been up-dated on the AADR website. On-line training for non-discrimination for hard to reach individuals is being made available. President Peters has signed up.
  • The Commission’s website has a new look. Check it out when you get a chance.
  • The NIU Wellness Fair will be held April 6th at the Holmes Student Center Ballroom.
  • The Caremark prescription requirement of obtaining a three month supply was again raised. There are many concerns but the main ones raised where: quantity of drugs in the home was dangerous; financial burden for low income; and gel form drugs will disintegrate over time.

Adjournment:

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Jan Rintala and seconded by Virginia Cassidy. The motion was approved unanimously. Barbara Burrell adjourned the meeting at 2:35 p.m.
