The Wilma D. Stricklin 1997 Recipient: Judith Bischoff


BischoffBischoff came to NIU in 1973, as an assistant professor in physical education. She was named acting chair of her department in 1989, and permanent chair the following year.

Her involvement on committees aimed at enhancing opportunities for women is extensive: chair, Commitment to Equity Committee for NCAA Self-Study Certification(1993-94); Ad Hoc Committee on Gender Equity in Athletics(1993-94); Affirmative Action Committee(1989-92; chair, 1991-92); Presidential Commission on the Status of Women(1983-86; chair, 1984-86); and Women's Studies Advisory Committee(1981-83; chair, 1982-83).

In addition to her committee work, Dr. Bischoff was cited for having made opportunities for women part of standard operating procedure in her area. She has hired women, promoted women and mentored promising female colleagues who aspired to leadership positions.

In addition to her departmental duties, Bishchoff serves on the University Advisory Committee to the Board of Trustees, sits as a member of the University Council and Faculty Senate, and served as the executive secretary of the University Council and chair of the Faculty Assembly.
