Borrow-a-Bike Program

Bikes Are Available Starting Tuesday, February 21, 2017.

Bike Return Date is Friday, April 28, 2017.

The Borrow-a-Bike program provides currently-enrolled students, faculty and staff with a free and environmentally-friendly alternative mode of transportation for getting around campus! Bikes are available at Campus Parking Services on a first-come, first-served basis. Please remember that you must have your NIU OneCard with you when borrowing a bike.

Because your safety is of the utmost importance to us, we have implemented an online bike safety course. The Borrow-a-Bike program safety course is web-based and must be completed through Blackboard. You must read the course materials, watch the course videos, and receive a score of 100% on the safety quiz in order to request to borrow a bicycle from us.

You only need to pass the safety quiz once during your stay at NIU.

In order to request access to Blackboard's Borrow-a-Bike safety course, you must fill out a form located here: Borrow-a-Bike safety course application form.

This form must be filled out completely and correctly.

Incomplete or inaccurate forms will not be processed.

Hit the SUBMIT button only once!!

Please allow 1-3 business days for processing the form before you receive access to the course.

Upon successful completion of the safety course quiz, you may come to Campus Parking Services, during scheduled check out times, to borrow a bike. Bikes are still available on a first-come, first-served basis and completing the safety course does not guarantee that you will receive a bike. Therefore, make sure to complete the safety course as soon as possible in order to have a better chance of receiving a bike.

General Information

A lock, helmet, bell, and lights are furnished with each bike. Bikes and equipment can be returned to the Campus Parking Services office from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After or near the end of each semesters there is an inventory and maintenance period in which all bikes must be returned. Bikes are not automatically reinstated after the inventory and maintenance period -- you must come to Campus Parking Services to check out a bike again if you wish to borrow a bike for the next semester.

A borrower will be charged for any equipment that is returned late, in damaged condition, or not returned at all (lost or stolen). Late fees are assessed at $5.00 per day for each day beyond the bike's due date up to 10 days. Lost or stolen bikes and all related equipment will be assessed at replacement cost, plus 10 days fine. See below for a complete fee schedule.

The State of Illinois maintains excellent resources for cyclists, providing safety tips, rules of the road, and other bike maintenance information.
