NIU’s strategic planning process, which began in the fall of 2006, generated a flood of ideas, including more than 30 proposals related to P-20 education. Each proposal came with enthusiastic faculty advocates who then collaborated to produce more focused proposals. Four NIU colleges are collaborating with school districts to raise students’ literacy skills through school-based projects that integrate arts and literacy education.
NIU’s STEM Outreach delivers off-campus programs and on-campus activities designed to increased STEM literacy and enthusiasm among P-12 students, their families, and educators.
NIU will increase the supply of competent educators in critical shortage areas and ensure all teacher graduates have relevant knowledge, skills, and dispositions in their respective disciplines.
NIU and DeKalb High School are developing a partnership high school that is structured as a professional development school and focused on implementation of the Three-Tiered Model to improve student achievement and behavior. A joint DHS-NIU Design Team coordinates the development process.
The work of the collaborative will focused on student development issues such as identity, school environment, peer relationships, motivation, and parental involvement.
School district partners will collaborate with NIU educators and researchers in using student performance data to develop research-based innovations that successfully raise student achievement and meet new federal mandates for individualized interventions.
