Anecdotal evidence abounds that more female than male students are in foreign language classrooms, especially at advanced levels. In collaboration with foreign language teachers at Rolling Meadows High School, we are exploring possible reasons for this phenomenon. Family influence, peer pressure, the learners' belief that languages are less important than other subjects, and the lack of suitable role models among teachers are among possible causes we are investigating.
