To enhance professional growth, content knowledge, and instructional practices of middle school mathematics teachers and to increase their students' understanding of mathematics, NIU engaged 25 middle school teachers in a high-needs district to complete an MST degree with specialization in Middle School Mathematics Education. Besides course work, the program includes reflection and school-based assignments that link research and practice, and professional development that emphasizes problem solving, communication, inquiry, students' mathematical thinking, and connecting mathematics to subjects such as sciences and engineering.
