Next Steps for Future NIU Undergraduate Students

More than 5,000 new students choose NIU each year for the outstanding academic programs and faculty, exciting campus life opportunities, dynamic career preparation, convenient location, and affordability. We hope that you too will make the decision to be part of the Huskie Family!

Use this page as a guide to attending NIU. We will provide resources and information from visiting campus to enrolling in that first day of college!

 Future Student "Must Do" List


  • Visit NIU:

    • Come on out to DeKalb and visit NIU, we would love to see you and show you around!
  • Apply to NIU & Confirm Your Admission:

    • Fill out an application to attend NIU. 
    • Once admitted to the University, make sure to confirm your admission to let us know you are planning on attending! 
  • Sign up for Orientation:

  • Take your Placement Tests:

    • Make sure you take the required placement tests for your majors or course that you are enrolling in. We recommend taking these before orientation. This way you can have the results when you register for courses and Orientation is a long day and you want to be at your best when completing these exams.  
  • Apply for On-Campus Housing:

    • Make sure to Apply for On-campus Housing
    • Confirm your housing arrangements as soon as possible so you can be assigned a room and a roommate, or choose one! 
  • Apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships:

    • To make sure you take advantage of all opportunities available to you, make sure toApply for Financial Aid. You might qualify for more than you think! 
    • The Scholarship Office can help assist you in the search for both NIU Scholarships as well as Private Scholarships.
  • Send in Your Final Transcripts:

    • Don’t forget to send your final HS and or College transcripts when courses are completed or you have graduated
  • Send in Your Immunization Record:

    • All students attending NIU must inquire about the required immunizations for NIU and have a current record of those immunizations sent to the university. Visit Health Services for more information.
  • Inquire about NIU Student Insurance:

    • Insurance is automatically applied for students enrolled in 9 or more credit hours on campus and all International Students unless otherwise stated. If you are covered under another insurance plan, you must contact Health Services to decline the coverage.
  • Stay Connected with NIU:

    • Check MyNIU regularly. This will allow you to see what you need to complete your admission, financial aid and other important tasks. Make sure to look at your account regularly.
    • Check your NIU Student E-Mail account. This is your connection with the university where important announcements and information from faculty, staff and university administrators will be sent.

    • This is a great resource for more information and to start meeting fellow NIU Students!

Looking Ahead


  • Do you Have Your Text Books?

    • Look at the NIU bookstores textbook search to see what courses require what books. There are options to purchase used text books or to rent them for a semester as well.
  • What will the Next Four Years Look Like?

 Key Dates and Deadlines


  • March 1st

    • This is the priority deadline for completing the FAFSA. To make sure you qualify for as much financial aid as possible, make sure to apply early.
  • January 1st - February 1st

    • This is when many of NIU's scholarship deadlines fall. This early deadline allows for students to know what scholarships they qualify for before their first semester of enrollment to NIU.
