Orientation Reservation

Make an Online Reservation or
Print off and mail in your reservation.

The final freshman and transfer orientation programs for Spring 2011 will be held on January 13 and 14, at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. on both days.  These programs are an abbreviated version of the more comprehensive programs offered earlier this fall.

The non-refundable New Student Fee is $75 ($78 if paying online).  This fee can be paid by credit or debit card online prior to orientation; or by check, cash or money order with mail-in form when you check-in on your reserved date.  Credit or debit card is not a payment option at check-in.  The fee covers the cost of materials, staffing, facilities, and administration of the program.

Follow online payment and reservation instructions to schedule a program date and time.  An e-mail confirming the time and date of your reservation will be sent to your NIU e-mail account.

Please be aware that class availability at this point in the registration cycle is limited. If you choose not to attend NIU this term, be advised that the New Student Fee can be applied to a later term, but cannot be refunded.  Do not make a reservation or payment until you have been formally admitted to the University.

Your orientation program will consist of:

  • an explanation of Northern’s degree requirements and an overview of student services
  • an explanation of Northern’s registration system
  • an opportunity to complete placement and/or proficiency testing
  • a meeting with your undergraduate college
  • academic advising
  • an opportunity to obtain your NIU OneCard (photo ID).

Check-in for the two sessions will begin each day at 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. in the Illinois Room located on the second floor in the Holmes Student Center.  You are encouraged to look over your Degree Progress Report (DPR) accessed through your MyNIU ("Self Service" left side menu), prior to attending orientation.  If you have not already done so, final transcripts need to be sent to the Admissions Office.

It is best to plan on a full day for your orientation session although the process will be quicker for some students.  There is no family orientation program offered on these dates due to space and staffing limitations.

Parking on the above dates is available in the Visitor Parking Lot at a cost of $5 per day.  We recommend that you arrive early to allow ample time to reach the orientation site.  Click here for directions and additional parking information.
