Admission Requirements for the Master of Public Health

Advance your career by applying for admission to NIU. Once admitted, you must complete the Master of Public Health program application.

Admission Requirements

This is a graduate-level program to prepare professionals for leadership positions in public health and health-related agencies health and human sciences professionals.  For admission, applicants must submit:

  • A baccalaureate degree in any major
  • The Graduate School application form
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A recommended undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • A satisfactory score on the GRE
  • A written statement of purpose

Professional or volunteer experience in a community or public health agency, performance in previous graduate-level course work, and any courses taken as a student-at large will also be considered in admissions decisions.

  1. Submit an application directly to the NIU Graduate School
  2. Submit your official transcripts

Applications for admission must be submitted in accordance with established deadlines. Application deadlines: July 15th for fall, December 10th for spring, and June 1st for summer.

Applying as a Student at Large

  • Some students choose to apply as SALs rather than applying directly to the program.
  • If your GPA is under 3.0 or you have not completed all application requirements by the Graduate School deadline, you must complete 15 hours as a SAL and maintain a GPA of 3.2 before applying
  • SALs may only transfer 18 credit hours toward their degrees (NIU classes only).
