Admissions Requirements

You must be prepared in the following ways:

• Pass the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) Basic Skills Test 
  • Read more information about test dates, locations, and cost
• Complete pre-elementary education course work with a minimum of 3.00 GPA
• Pass the criminal background check/fingerprinting requirement through NIU
  • Visit the teacher certification page for the form and directions

Apply to NIU by following these steps:

• Submit an application with your official transcripts
• Meet with Mary Keil, the program advisor for Elementary Education, to review your previous course work, discuss appropriate courses to meet your goals, and plan the details of completing your degree
• Submit an application to Elementary Education program
  by contacting the Department of Teaching and Learning at (815) 753-8350
