Emoticons are graphical representation of feelings or facial expressions. They can be useful in providing context clues around the content you type, helping to ensure a natural form of communication. They also help to ensure the intent of your words is understood.
Here are some examples:
CAPITAL LETTERS imply you are shouting, so please refrain from using them unless they are necessary.
Break your text into chunks anytime your reply is long. This allows the flow of the conversation to continue and ensures the audience that you are asking and answering their questions. Some people prefer to use ellipses when doing this so that the other chatters understand more is to come.
Be persistent when asking questions. Sometimes the people in the room will miss your question because they have typed another answer or simply missed your remark. If you feel this has happened, take time to clarify that you were heard or cut and paste you words again to ensure the chatters understood.
