Family Connections Events
Family Weekend is an opportunity for families to spend a weekend together with their student to explore the NIU and DeKalb community! For events that require registration, check back in early June.

What is Fall Family Weekend?
Family Weekend will be held September 23-25. The focus of the event is to welcome parents, family members, and family friends of our students to campus so that they can have the opportunity to experience a portion of their student’s life at NIU.
Who can attend Family Weekend?
Family Weekend is open to all families. It’s a great time to come and experience campus with your student. We invite parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and alumni to attend.
How does the schedule work?
The schedule Family Weekend is set up in a way that you get to choose which events you want to attend. We try to host a variety of events that will appeal to a wide array of interests, so there may be some sessions scheduled at the same time. Some events may require an additional cost or some events will have special discount rates.
Where do I register?
Yes, all participants should register to attend. This helps the campus partners to prepare for you when you arrive on-campus. Registration is available at niu.edu/ofc. Once you are at the Family Weekend event page click on the red button that says “Registration.”
What do we do when we first get to campus and how do we meet up with our student?
Please go to the designated check-in times and location in Holmes Student Center, Gallery Lounge to receive your Family Weekend registration materials. This is a great location to meet your student.
Can my student pick up my registration materials?
Yes, check-in is offered on Friday at the Holmes Student Center, Gallery Lounge from 6-9 p.m. and at “The Yard” on Saturday (TBA). If you are unable to be present at these designated times, your student can pick up your materials.
How can I purchase tickets to the Family Weekend football game?
Tickets can be purchased through the Family Weekend Registration site at niu.edu/ofc. Tickets for the EAST side (student side) are $15.00 a piece (limit 2). Students will not need to purchase a ticket since students get in free. If students and families want to purchase tickets on the WEST side of the stadium the cost will be $25.00 apiece.
What side of the stadium should I sit on?
Students get a free football ticket to the EAST side of the stadium. Families are welcome to sit on the east side but their student will need to purchase a guest ticket for $15.00 a piece (limit 2).
What should I expect during the football game?
There are a lot of people at tailgating at the football game. Please plan extra time and patience for parking and walking, and wear comfortable shoes.
What can I expect at the Family Weekend Tailgate?
Enjoy a family-oriented tailgate experience at “The Yard.” Food will the provided and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase near the tent. There will also be a huge TV screen and a “kids zone” with plenty of activities.
Are refunds available?
The deadline for refunds is September 16 by 4:00 p.m. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to request a refund, or via telephone 815-753-1535. If a refund is NOT requested by this date your registration can be canceled but you cannot receive a refund.
Are tickets needed for every event?
Some events are an additional fee and will be confirmed in your confirmation registration e-mail.
Can I pay at the door for events?
Events that have an associated cost it is recommended that you register in advance since space is limited.
Family Day 2016
Family Day is an opportunity for parents and family members to re-visit and re-acclimate themselves to the university as well as learn and participate in diverse programs and services on the campus. We plan to have planned activities for every age.
