Bachelor of Science in Nursing FAQs
How do I apply?
First apply to the university. Indicate on the applications that you are a nursing major. You may get further information from the Office of Admissions at http://www.admissions.niu.edu. After being accepted for admission to the university, students will then be reviewed for admission to the School of Nursing .
What are the admission requirements?
FRESHMAN APPLICANTS (Any applicant with less than 24 semester hours of transferable college credit)
- Completed application for admission with nursing listed as area of academic interest.
- An official high school transcript that includes class rank and courses completed or an official GED score report.
- An official ACT score report sent to NIU by ACT Inc. or an official SAT score report sent to NIU by the College Board.
- An ACT Reading score of 24 or higher sent to NIU by the ACT Inc or achievement of a reading comprehension score in compliance with the School of Nursing standards. Applicants should contact the NIU Office of Testing Services for further information about the standardized reading test used by the School of Nursing.
TRANSFER APPLICANTS (Any applicant with 24 or more semester hours of transferable college credit).
- Completed application for admission with nursing listed as area of academic interest.
- Official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
- An ACT Reading score of 24 or higher sent to NIU by the ACT or achievement of a reading comprehension score in compliance with the School of Nursing standards. Applicants should contact the NIU Office of Testing Services for further information about the standardized reading test used by the School of Nursing .
- Completion of a minimum of 5 nursing prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better by February 15 application deadline. All prerequisite nursing courses must be completed prior to beginning the nursing courses.
CURRENT NIU STUDENTS must complete an application for admission to the School of Nursing .
- These applications (for current NIU students ONLY) are available September 1 to February 15 at the College of Health and Human Sciences or the School of Nursing .
When is the application deadline?
Nursing applications are accepted between September 1 and February 15 . Students new to the university must apply through the Office of Admissions, specify their major as nursing, must be admitted to the university and must submit their reading comprehension score by the application deadline of February 15 in order to be considered for admission to nursing.
When will I find out if I am admitted?
Acceptance or non-acceptance letters are mailed out near the end of April.
Do you permit students to begin nursing courses in spring semester also, or only fall?
Students may begin taking nursing courses in either the fall or spring semester at the discretion of the School of Nursing .

Can I take the prerequisite courses at a community college?
Yes, prerequisite courses may be taken at your local community college. Course articulation information is available on the Admissions website.

Do you have online courses?
There are currently no online nursing courses available for the Basic Bachelor of Science in nursing student.
Where do classes meet?
Nursing classes meet in DeKalb at the School of Nursing at 1240 Normal Road .
