‘Click It or Ticket’ begins

Beginning today, Illinois motorists can expect round-the-clock enforcement of seat belt laws.

Who is most at risk while riding unbuckled?

  • Nighttime drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, of the 12,671 passenger vehicle occupants who died in motor vehicle crashes between the nighttime hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. in 2008, nearly two-thirds (64 percent) were not wearing seat belts, compared to less than half (45 percent) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed during the daytime hours of 6 a.m. to 5:59 p.m.
  • Teens. In 2008, 70 percent of the passenger vehicle occupants ages 13 to 15 killed in traffic crashes were not buckled up – the highest percentage of all age groups.
  • Young adults. Among passenger vehicle occupants ages 25 to 34 who were killed in crashes, 66 percent were not buckled up – the second highest percentage for any age group.
  • Men. Men are less likely than women to buckle up. This is especially true of young men. In 2008, 66 percent of male drivers and 74 percent of male passengers ages 18 to 34 killed in passenger vehicles were not wearing their seat belts.
  • Pickup drivers and passengers. Pickup truck drivers and passengers continue to have lower seat belt use rates than occupants of other passenger vehicles. In 2008, 67 percent of pickup truck drivers and 70 percent of pickup truck passengers who were killed in traffic crashes were not buckled up.

Always remember to buckle up. For more information, contact Melanie Wingo at (815) 761-7365 or mwingo@niu.edu.

Library to shift periodicals

Beginning on or around Tuesday, June 1, the Periodical section located on the first floor of Founders Memorial Library will undergo a major shift in its arrangement.

The shift should take approximately two weeks to complete. As always, patrons who experience trouble finding particular print periodical titles should ask the staff at the Periodicals Desk for help.

Currently, the periodicals are arranged by journal title A to Z. Under the new arrangement, the periodicals will be placed in call number order. This new arrangement will bring periodicals together that, in the current arrangement, are split apart because of changes in the periodicals’ titles.

Send any questions concerning the shift to eteolson@niu.edu.

First-Year Connections seeks
mentors for new students

First-Year Connections (FYC) is looking for NIU faculty and supportive professional staff who are interested in volunteering their time to mentor new students during their transition to NIU.

The Student-Faculty Links mentoring program is a component of Orientation & First-Year Experience.

Student-Faculty Links mentors are asked to fill out short surveys to match them with new students who express similar interests or are in a related academic department. Mentors and mentees are then notified in early August with each other’s contact information and are invited to an informal reception hosted by the FYC staff in the early fall. All meetings after the reception are to be determined by the mentor and the student.

The Student-Faculty Links program gives NIU faculty and supportive professional staff a unique opportunity to reach out and make a difference in the lives of new students. Your involvement is highly beneficial to new students seeking guidance and encouragement to make their college experience successful and enjoyable.

If you are interested in mentoring a new student for Fall 2010 or would like to learn more about the Student-Faculty Links program, contact First-Year Connections by phone at (815) 753-0028 or e-mail firstconn@niu.edu.
