NIU encouraged to recycle batteries

February 15, 2010

Recycle batteries!

Stop throwing batteries in the trash! NIUís Task Force for a Sustainable Campus Environment (Green Team) will take them free of charge!

Instead of throwing alkaline and rechargeable batteries in the garbage, the Green Team has announced a new initiative to recycle these batteries.

This is an opportunity for the campus community to be involved with a green program that promotes sustainability and environmental awareness by recycling batteries commonly found in the office environment.

Hereís what to do:

  • Seal the battery terminals with tape to prevent accidental discharge during shipment.
  • Once the battery terminals have been safely secured with tape, insert them into the reusable envelope being sent to departments and mail to Campus Mail Services.

The following types of batteries will be accepted: rechargeable batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and other small alkaline batteries found in typical office equipment and supplies.

There is no limit to the number of batteries that can be placed in the envelope as long as the envelope can be sealed and secured during shipment. For additional envelopes, call Campus Mail Services at (815) 753-1183.
