of NIU College of Education

An educator whose background includes world-class accomplishment in track and field, military intelligence for the U.S. Army and management roles inside Fortune 500 companies is the new dean of the NIU College of Education.

La Vonne I. Neal, currently dean of the College of Education at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, will assume the top job July 1 pending Board of Trustees approval.

Four members of NIU’s Operating Staff have been chosen to receive the Outstanding Service Award for 2010.

The recipients are Marcia Dick, a senior library specialist in the Reference Department of the University Libraries; Jennifer Gregory, office support specialist in the School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders; Lee Ann Henry, administrative assistant in University Advancement; and Lenita Hepker, administrative assistant in the Office of the Dean in the College of Business.

Eight weeks ago, nine NIU students had registered their projects the first Undergraduate Research Day.

When the event begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 29, more than 100 students are prepared to show off their scholarship inside the Altgeld Hall auditorium.

‘farewell’ concert of American music

Harold and Cecelia Kafer will celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary this August shortly after Harold retires from his current role as deputy provost at NIU and Cecelia closes her private voice studio.

First, however, the two will reprise their popular “American Words and Music from the Stage, Screen and Heart” concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2, in the Recital Hall of the NIU Music Building.

The annual Benefits Choice Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center.

Employees will have the opportunity to talk with representatives from Human Resources and from the various benefits vendors in preparation for making benefit choices and changes during the annual Benefits Choice Period from May 1 to May 31.
