President launches budget Web site

March 30, 2009

President John Peters has announced the creation of a Web site where NIU employees can access accurate and timely information regarding the state’s financial plan while debate on that topic proceeds over the next several weeks and months.

“Like all state agencies, NIU has much at stake in this budget and lots of information, and misinformation is likely to be circulating. To ensure that NIU faculty, staff and annuitants have the best data available we have created the FY2010 State Budget Web site,” Peters said.

The current proposal from the governor includes a 1.6 percent increase in general revenue funding for NIU for next year. “We are hopeful that figure will stand, but this is by no means guaranteed,” Peters said. “There will be much debate over the next few weeks, and the situation is very fluid.”

To keep the campus community informed as that process proceeds, the Web site will be updated frequently. The site currently includes information on the following topics:

  • Governor’s budget. Links are provided Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget Web site, which includes a variety of resources including a tax calculator, answers to commonly asked questions and a PowerPoint presentation covering the highlights of his proposal.
  • Pension. Much debate will be devoted to proposed pension reforms. The site includes links to information on the governor’s proposal, some analysis by SURS and a senate bill on that topic. Proposals being discussed in Springfield include requiring increased contributions from current employees, and major changes in how the pension plan is structured for future employees.
  • Federal Stimulus Money. Information is available on recently approved federal stimulus packages that could help fund many projects and programs on campus. Links on the site describe available funds and how to apply.
  • Capital Bill. To stimulate the state economy, Gov. Quinn has proposed a $26 billion capital bill which could fund several projects on campus. Links to information on that plan are provided.
  • Budget process. An overview of the state budget process is available.

President Peters and other members of the university leadership team will appear Wednesday, April 1, before the Senate Appropriations Committee and before the House Appropriations Committee the following day.
