Quartet honored for excellence
in undergraduate teaching, instruction

Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and InstructionWhat separates the great teachers from the good?

It is a question that can be debated endlessly without ever arriving at a definitive answer. However, examining the careers of the professors and instructors singled out for honors by NIU undergraduate students this year offers a pretty good outline for any such discussion.

Winners of this year's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award – Katharina Barbe, German; Lisa Finkelstein, psychology; and David Gunkel, communication – become the latest names in a line of outstanding professors dating back to 1966 to receive that award.

Joe Bonomo of the English Department, winner of the Excellence in Undergraduate Instruction, has the distinction of being the first-ever recipient of that honor.

CEET celebrates 20th anniversary

Promod VohraWhile the “guest of honor” was not quite of legal drinking age, that did not stop faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology from gathering last month to toast 20 years of success for the college.

The April 21 event included an afternoon open house at the college and an evening dinner for more than 200 guests at the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center. The celebration was sponsored in part by one of the college's strongest corporate supporters, Hamilton Sundstrand.

“Now that we are out of our teen years, we are mature, responsible, forward-looking and proactive,” Dean Promod Vohra proclaimed at the evening event. “We have proven our viability, are certain of our future and very proud of our heritage.”

That a dean, especially one who holds a degree from CEET, could stand before a room full of alumni and make such a declaration seemed highly improbable a quarter century ago.

mentors for student-faculty links

Student-Faculty Links, a component of NIU's First-Year Connections Program, is recruiting faculty and staff who want to make a difference in the lives of new students during their first semester on campus.

Mentors are asked to complete a short questionnaire, which helps the Orientation Office match new students and mentors based on common academic and/or extracurricular interests. Matches are made in early August, after early orientation sessions when new students can express interest in the program.

Mentors and students are invited to an informal reception during Welcome Days in August. After the initial meeting, the pair determines how frequently they will meet and communicate. Most matches continue at least through the first semester, and many extend beyond.
