Shortly before Rod Angotti became chair of the Department of Computer Science, nearly the entire faculty resigned.
But things have turned out quite well for Angotti, who retired July 1 and leaves behind as his legacy one of the most highly respected mainframe computing programs in the country.
Angotti, who until now was the only chair in the history of the program, was replaced by Raimund K. Ege, who comes to NIU from Florida International University where he served as director of graduate studies.
Angotti arrived at NIU in 1967 as a member of the faculty in the Math Department, became assistant chair of the newly created Department of Mathematical Sciences in 1968 and three years later was appointed assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
In 1982, he was appointed acting chair of the new Department of Computer Science, and immediately faced a crisis.

Work is under way to reconstruct and reconfigure the parking lot on the east side of the Chick Evans Field House.
“That is an extremely important central parking lot,” said Parking and Traffic Coordinator Laura Lundelius. “Not only will this project upgrade a parking lot that is in terrible shape, it will also allow us to address a number of safety issues as well.”
The parking lot was closed for business June 29, with demolition beginning June 30. The goal is to have the work completed before students return in August.
Among the biggest concerns addressed in the new design will be pedestrian safety.
As currently configured, the parking lot is a favorite shortcut for students coming from residence halls on the West Campus to classrooms on Central Campus. In the new configuration, a wide raised sidewalk will diagonally bisect the parking lot from Lucinda Avenue to the University Circle bus turnaround, keeping pedestrians out of harm’s way.
