Arthur Young, dean of University Libraries, delivered the keynote address at the May meeting of the Caxton Club of Chicago, a 109-year-old organization whose members share a common interest in the art of book production. The group is named in honor of the first English printer, William Caxton.
Young was invited to speak on the long-term influence of writer Horatio Alger, whose works are synonymous with the American dream.
University Libraries boasts the world’s top Horatio Alger collection, with about 4,000 volumes of his books and publications. During his lifetime, Alger wrote 119 books and more than 500 stories and poems.
