Move-In Day 2003

NIU prepares for Move-In Day

Move-in Day volunteers will get into action a bit early this year, with a Team NIU Kick-off Tailgate party at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13, on the patio just west of Douglas Hall on the West Campus.

In case of rain, the kick-off event will be moved to the Illinois Room of the Holmes Student Center, Aug. 13, from 2 until 4 p.m. Dessert will be served.

At the kick-off party, volunteers will receive instruction for Move-In Day and will be given the Team NIU T-shirts they are to wear that day. Shirts not picked up at the event must be picked up from Phyllis Jones, 104N, Neptune East, on Monday Aug. 16. No shirts will be delivered to individuals this year.

Those attending the event will be part of an army of 225 volunteers (faculty, staff and local residents) that has signed on to assist the more than 5,000 students expected to move into NIU residence halls. Once again, they will use a fleet of more than 100 golf carts to assist in this process, helping families unload carloads of belongings and transport them to residence halls where student volunteers will help students move into their rooms.

Volunteers are strongly encouraged to walk or take the shuttle bus to West Campus on Move-In Day. The shuttle will run from Altgeld Hall between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m. and again from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and at the end of the day. The West Campus bus stop will be located at the corner of Stadium Drive East and Douglas Drive North.

Once on West Campus, volunteers must sign-in at the Douglas Hall loading dock, on the west side of the building. There they will receive their parking lot assignment and can look at maps outlining the routes that carts are to follow.

Morning volunteers should return their carts to the Douglas Hall loading dock by noon. Afternoon volunteers will be asked to drive carts to the Transportation garage, where shuttle buses to campus will be available.

In appreciation for their service, volunteers are eligible to purchase half-off tickets to the Great Huskie Bash on Thursday, Aug. 19. The Bash features music, games and food from local restaurants.
