Hemphill named vice president
for Student Affairs
Brian
O. Hemphill has been named NIU's new vice president for Student
Affairs.
Hemphill comes
to NIU from the University of Arkansas, where he has served as the
associate vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students
for the past three years. His hiring concludes a national search
that began last fall.
“I am pleased
that NIU has attracted a person of such experience and energy to
bring renewed focus to student affairs,” said NIU President John
Peters. “When we elevated this job to a cabinet-level position,
it was my feeling that students needed to be heard at the highest
council of the university, and I am confident that Dr. Hemphill
will provide them with a strong voice.”
In his new position,
Hemphill will oversee almost all university functions related to
student life.

Peters
reports to campus on state budget NIU
President John Peters informed the university community on the new
state budget through an all-campus e-mail, sent July 27:
Dear Colleagues,
After a record-setting
58 days of overtime budget negotiations in Springfield, I’m pleased
to report that NIU’s FY05 operating budget has been spared any further
cuts, and we have received assurances that no further rescissions
will be ordered this fiscal year.
Following three
straight years of budget cuts and a loss to NIU of nearly $40 million
in state funding, news of a “flat” budget (locked in at the same
level as last year’s budget) gives us reason to hope that we have
reached a turning point in the financial crisis dogging all of Illinois’
public universities.
Beyond that,
I believe we achieved a substantial victory this year by convincing
public officials that their support for “education” must include
higher education.

grants through the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the Local
Inter-Agency Networking Council (LINC).
Each poster
displays a convenient tablet of pull-off sheets containing important
developmental milestones and contact information for Child and Family

Shared-advising
system will help
undecided
students find career path
In an effort
to improve retention rates, NIU will implement a shared-advising
system for undecided students beginning in the fall of 2005.
NIU now has
a college- and department-based advising system. The change specifically
targets freshmen and transfer students who have not declared a major
or selected a college. Under the new structure, these students will
be assisted by both a shared-advising office and the Counseling
and Student Development Center (CSDC).
CSDC’s Career
Services counselors assist students in exploring their career development
and understanding the academic and career-choice process. This enables
the students to make appropriate choices regarding major areas of
study and career paths.
“We believe
undecided students will be best served by advisors who are working
in tandem with career counselors,” Vice Provost Earl “Gip” Seaver
said.
