NIU changes policy on
credential file retention

NIU has changed its policy for credential file retention.

As of Sept. 1, credential files will be kept for 10 years from their last date of use. Credential files that have been inactive for longer than 10 years will be removed, and all confidential records and identifying information will be destroyed.

Graduates can ask that their non-confidential letters of recommendation be returned upon request by Sept. 1, 2004. Graduates may re-establish a file at any time. The new file will be subject to the same policies as those stated above.

Faculty Development hosts
Teaching Effectiveness Institute

NIU’s Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center invites all faculty and teaching SPS to its 10th Teaching Effectiveness Institute, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12, and Friday, Aug. 13, in the Holmes Student Center.

Thursday (“Fundamental Principles of Effective Instruction”) will introduce faculty to basic principles of teaching, offer information about support resources and policies related to teaching, and accommodating students’ needs. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to network with both new and experienced faculty at NIU.

Friday will feature a workshop titled “Infusing Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum,” facilitated by Eugene Hermitte, an associate professor of history from Johnson C. Smith University.

Participants will discuss how to develop campus-wide competence in critical thinking skills, learn about four key skills that every student should possess, and explore teaching strategies used to encourage these competencies. Through interactive activities and group discussion, participants will develop goals and specific strategies and technology to improve students’ critical thinking skills.

Both days of the institute will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Faculty and teaching staff interested in registering for the institute or who would like further information can call 753-0595 or e-mail facdev@niu.edu. Deadline for registration is 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Seats are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

For both days of the institute, all participants will receive institute materials, refreshments and a certificate signed by the provost. This institute is sponsored in part by the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center and Pepsi Cola General Bottlers, Inc.

Renowned speaker to rally
residence hall team

Maura J. Cullen, an internationally renowned educational consultant and speaker will challenge Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) staff to exceed their own expectations at the department’s annual kick-off event, scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium of the Holmes Student Center.

The university community is invited and encouraged to attend.

Cullen stresses that diversity should be celebrated, and that conquering fears can lead to a more dynamic and inspired life. Gender, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic class, religion, ability, size discrimination and crisis intervention are key themes she has shared with more than 300 college and university audiences.

The annual SHDS kick-off event encourages campus housing and dining administrators, staff and student workers to jointly build team spirit and to celebrate their shared goals.

Cullen is a full-time educational consultant and speaker. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and psychological services and a doctorate of education in social justice and diversity education.

FIT program offers
launch pad for exercise

Fitness Images Today (FIT), located in Anderson Hall 127, is an on-campus, adult fitness program, open to NIU employees, spouses of employees, retirees, and residents of the surrounding communities.

The program offers a variety of classes (including water aerobics), a weight and cardiovascular room, blood pressure screenings, body composition analysis, flexibility testing, as well as individual program design.

The staff is comprised of a program coordinator and four graduate assistants, trained in health and fitness, who are available to assist individuals who are new to exercise, returning to exercise after injury, or who just need a little extra guidance or jumpstart for their exercise program.

Fall sessions start Aug. 23. Cost is $65 for fall semester. Contact the FIT staff at 753-0335 or via e-mail at jkieronski@niu.edu for details on enrollment, cost or programs.

KNPE offers program
for child motor development

NIU’s Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education will offer an early childhood motor development program again this fall.

The 10-week program for children from ages 3 to 6 is scheduled from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 13 and ending. The program fee is $100 per term, and sessions take place in Anderson Hall

Clersida Garcia, director of the program, said the curriculum includes learning movement concepts, developing fundamental motor skills, coordination, swimming and rhythmical abilities, as well as games and fitness.

Mortar Board chapter
looking for advisers

The Pleiades chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society at NIU is looking for additional faculty/staff advisers. If you are interested in supporting some of NIU’s most outstanding students or have been involved with Mortar Board in the past, please consider becoming a chapter advisor.

Mortar Board, one of the most prestigious honor societies in the country, recognizes students for outstanding contributions and commitment to the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. The Pleiades chapter selects 50 NIU seniors for membership each year.
