  • NIU anthropologist Kendall Thu was among six scholars who met at Stanford University in late September to begin a global assessment of industrialized animal production practices. The Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), a committee of the International Council for Science, located in Paris, called the planning meeting in light of projections for an increasing world demand for livestock. It is projected that by 2020 meat production will have to increase by 60 percent to meet population growth and a growing standard of living. Thu also participated in a Sept. 23 national agricultural summit in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Democratic presidential candidate Richard Gephardt called the summit to discuss farm policies.
  • Douglas Davis, director of NIU Cooperative Education/Internship Program, will receive the MCEIA (Midwest Cooperative Education & Internship Association) Educator of the Year award. This award will be presented Nov. 4 in Livonia, Mich.
