President, first lady host
annual holiday luncheon

NIU President John and Mrs. Barbara Peters invite all members of the university community to enjoy the festivities from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at NIU’s annual holiday luncheon in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of the Holmes Student Center. Visit with your colleagues, enjoy a buffet luncheon and show your Huskie spirit during special presentations.

Huskie Marching Band plan
indoor concert Nov. 21

The NIU Huskie Marching Band will present its annual indoor concert at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building.

The concert is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7:40 p.m.

Under the direction of Lawrence Stoffell and Margarite Ortega, the band will perform traditional NIU school songs, patriotic music and popular music from the 2003 football season, including selections from “Schoolhouse Rock,” AC/DC, Bob Fosse and “All That Jazz,” hip-hop dance favorites and a salute to veterans.

Members of The Silverettes dance line and the color guard flag unit will perform throughout the concert, and the drum line will showcase favorite cadences.

to celebrate Christmas

The 18th annual “It’s a Low Brass Christmas” takes place at noon Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Music Building Concert Hall Lobby.

Law Library announces
hours for finals, holidays

The David C. Shapiro Memorial Law Library has released a schedule of hours for the period covering final exams and the holidays.

The library is closed from Saturday, Dec. 20, through Friday, Jan. 2. Regular semester hours resume Monday, Jan. 12.

Revised hours the week of Thanksgiving are 7:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The library will extend its hours for reading period and final exams, beginning Sunday, Nov. 30, and ending Tuesday, Dec. 16. Hours are 7:15 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:15 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.

The library is open from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, and Friday, Dec. 19. It is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, and Sunday, Jan. 4.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the week of Monday, Jan. 5, through Friday, Jan. 9. The library is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 11.

Festival of Trees comes
to downtown DeKalb

Beautifully decorated trees and wreaths will be on display in downtown DeKalb beginning Friday, Nov. 28.

The Festival of Trees, sponsored by the Jefferson Elementary School PTA, is a holiday event for the whole family. In addition to the tree display, a craft show will feature vendors from all over northern Illinois. A full slate of entertainment is planned including pictures with Santa, storytelling, and dance and music performances by local groups. A tree-decorating clinic will be held, and a kids area will include face painting and holiday movies. A sampling of holiday sweet treats also will be available.

Some of the elegant trees will be raffled. A 25-inch color TV also will be raffled.

The festival will be held inside the former Sawyer Imports building on the corner of 5th Street and Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. It runs from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 28 through 30, and again Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children 12 and younger, and a family pass is available for $10 (two adults and unlimited children). All proceeds will benefit Jefferson School. For more information, call 754-2263.

Nominations sought for
NIU’s outstanding women

NIU’s Presidential Commission on the Status of Women will recognize the achievements of outstanding women who will graduate from NIU in 2004.

In cooperation with the Office of the President, the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, Women’s Studies Program and the Office of University Resources, the awards honor a select group of senior women, graduate students and third-year law students for their contributions to the university through leadership, community involvement, volunteer service and scholarship.

Preference in the selection process is shown to women with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
