New Student Welcome Days

Here is a schedule of events for New Student Welcome Days 2003:

Thursday, Aug. 21

9 a.m.
University Residence Halls Open

9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Move in - University Residence Halls

Faculty, staff, student, and community volunteers will be available to assist new students with move-in. Go to www.niu.edu/housing/gridlock for more information.

All day
Water Bottle Thursday

Hot and tired? Look for members of Refuge, the Lutheran Student group, who will be handing out water bottles to those in need of refreshment during move-in.

10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Parents Association Move-in event - Diversions Lounge

Parents, come to the Holmes Student Center Diversions Show Lounge (next to TCF Bank) for free massages and refreshments after a morning of hard work. For more information, contact parents@niu.edu.

4 - 7 p.m.
The Great Huskie Bash - Central Park

This welcome-to-campus celebration in Central Park (located between Grant and Stevenson Towers) will feature food, music and lots of fun for the entire family. Admission is free. Food tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the event. Make plans to spend the day at NIU and join in the welcome celebration.

8 p.m.
Capture the Flag - Douglas Hall

Join Intervarsity Christian Fellowship for a fun night of capture the flag. Meet at the Douglas Hall main entrance at 8 p.m.

9 p.m. – midnight
Club Convo - Convocation Center

Come party with the Residence Hall Association (RHA) at the Convocation Center. With a club atmosphere, come enjoy non-alcoholic mixed drinks, good music, new people and lots of fun.

Friday, Aug. 22

11 a.m. – noon
New Student Convocation - Holmes Student Center

All new students are invited to and expected to take part in this NIU academic tradition. In full regalia, the president of the university, faculty and staff, will provide your academic introduction to NIU. Special buses will run from the residence halls directly to the event. Also, take advantage of this one-time offer to use your residence hall dining dollars to purchase food at select locations in the Holmes Student Center.

Noon - 2:30 p.m.
Friday Fest - Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Commons (MLK)
Directly following the convocation, mingle with representatives of campus organizations in the MLK Commons. Enjoy the free activities and find out how you can get involved.

1 - 3 p.m.
ITS Service Update Session- HSC basement lab
Visit the computer lab located in the basement of the Holmes Student Center where the Information Technology Services (ITS) student staff will help you make changes to your schedule, look up your e-mail address and log on to the system as needed.

3 - 4 p.m.
College Receptions

The college of your major will host a reception giving you the chance to meet faculty, staff and other students in your field. This is a good chance to make connections with professors and network with others having your same academic interest. Light refreshments will be served.

University Resources for Latinos and the Center for Latino and Latin American Studies Welcome Reception - Latino Center

Meet and greet faculty, staff and fellow students at the University Resources for Latinos for their welcome back celebration on 515 Garden Road. All are invited to attend.

3 -5 p.m.
Rainbow Social for LGBT and Ally Community - University Resources for Women
The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center and the Presidential Commission on Sexual Orientation invite all friends, family and allies of the LGBT community to come and hang out with friends old and new, and build your own ice cream sundae. Join us at the University Resources for Women, 105 Normal Road.

4 - 6 p.m.
Sizzle Fest - Central Park

Calling all students to Central Park. Come enjoy food, music and yard games. Be sure to bring your blanket, OneCard, and your roommate. It’s a great time for mixing with new students and staff, relaxing and having fun. Event sponsored by Student Housing and Dining Services.

6 p.m.
Mango’s Mania - Grant South

Join Campus Crusade for Christ to take a walk over to Mango’s for free ice cream. Meet on the steps of Grant South promptly at 6 p.m.

7 p.m.
Salsa and Swing Dance Lessons - Diversions

Come learn to salsa and swing dance with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Learn the best moves from professional instructors at the Holmes Student Center Diversions Show Lounge.

Saturday, Aug. 23

8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Parking Lot Sale – Lutheran Immanuel Church

Need to furnish your residence hall room or apartment with inexpensive things? Join Refuge, the Lutheran Student group, at their annual garage sale in the church’s parking lot. They are located at the big red church next to University Plaza at 511 Russell Road

3 p.m.
CAB Blockbuster Movies - Carl Sandburg Auditorium
Bring your popcorn and new-found friends to check out a free screening of two summer blockbusters: “The Lord of the Rings 2: The Two Towers” and “X-Men 2: X-Men United.” The event will take place in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium of the Holmes Student Center. Event sponsored by Campus Activities Board.

4:30 p.m.
Catholic Mass and Ice Cream Social - Newman Center

Come to the Newman Catholic Student Center to worship, learn about activities and enjoy free ice cream following the service at 512 Normal Road. For more information contact (815) 787-7770.

Meet the Greeks - Martin Luther King Commons

Join members from each chapter of the College Pan-Hellenic Council and Interfraternity Council for fun, food and information in the MLK Commons.

Video Scavenger Hunt - Grant South B Formal Lounge
Come out for an exciting game of video game scavenger hunt with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship.

7 - 11 p.m.
CAB Fun Fair - Diversions Lounge

Stop by the Diversions Lounge of the Holmes Student Center to participate in the annual fun fair. With fun activities such as the big chair, make-your-own dog tag and gel candles, it is sure to be a fun time for all. Event sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.

Sunday, Aug. 24

Catholic Mass and Pancake Breakfast - Newman Center

Come to the Newman Catholic Student Center to worship, learn about activities and enjoy a free pancake breakfast following the service at 512 Normal Road. For more information contact (815) 787-7770.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Wet and Wild on West Campus - Douglas Hall
Everyone is invited to get “wet and wild” on the west side of Douglas Hall. Come for the water games, food and music. Event sponsored by Student Housing and Dining Services.

2 p.m.
Class Schedule Tours – Residence Hall Lobbies & Holmes Student Center

Are you nervous about finding your classrooms on the first day of school? Have no fear. Bring your schedule and meet in the lobby of your residence hall or at the Holmes Student Center bus turn-around. Student volunteers will lead you on a personal tour of campus designed to help you find your classes. Conclude your tour at Sundae Sunday for more fun and free ice cream.

3:30 p.m.
Sundae Sunday – Neptune Central

Join us in Neptune Central and Neptune North for some cool treats! Build your own sundae from the many flavors of ice cream and toppings available. Bring your creativity, relax, enjoy the music and stay for some volleyball. Event sponsored by Student Housing and Dining Services.

4 p.m.
CAB Blockbuster Movies - Carl Sandburg Auditorium

Just in case you missed it the first time around: Come for a second showing of two blockbuster hits: “X-Men: X-Men United” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.” Don’t forget to bring your friends and your popcorn. Event sponsored by Campus Activities Board.

Refuge Welcome Back BBQ – Lutheran Student Refuge

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Introductory Meeting - Holmes Student Center 5th floor
Come join us for our first meeting of the semester. Find out how you can get involved and learn about upcoming events.

CRU Unplugged with Campus Crusade for Christ - Douglas Hall

All are welcome to a time of outdoor acoustic worship on the west side of Douglas Hall.
