Theatre & Dance announces subscription series for singles

Calling the idea the best alternative to the personal ads since cable TV's "Elimidate," NIU's School of Theatre and Dance recently announced its new Singular Subscription Series.

Intended for singles on and off-campus who want to meet people with similar theatrical interests, Singular Series subscribers attend all seven of the 2002-2003 NIU theatre productions on the same night. After the performances, they can meet over coffee, soda and snacks provided by the School of Theatre and Dance to talk about the plays. The gatherings will be hosted by the school's Student Activity Committee.

The upcoming season is designed to offer something for everyone. The season opened Sept. 19 with a remount Chicago production of the bawdy and irreverent comedy "The Servant of Two Masters." "The Mourning Bride," by William Congreve, opening Oct. 17, is a play that has not been performed in 209 years, but is produced with an "in-your-face" quality that a modern audience can truly appreciate. The final fall production is the Winter Dance Concert, featuring the nationally recognized Northern Dance Theatre pre-professional dance company, opening Nov. 21.

Brecht's haunting tale of one man's unsuspecting path to moral corruption, "A Man's a Man," runs Jan. 30 through Feb. 9. It is followed by "Marisol," by Jose Rivera, the story of a woman witness to, and caught in the middle of, the chaos that results when angels go to war to restore the perfect order of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Also coming to the main stage in the spring is a play rife with Freudian and farcical humor titled "The Play's The Thing," by Ferenc Molnar. The season ends with the modern dance, "Carmina Burana," which combines music, words, and movement of classical Greek tragedy and Italian baroque musical theatre.

Subscription prices are $42 for students and $72 general admission. The Singles Series Subscription is a limited time offer and ends Sept. 30. All plays are in the Stevens Building theatre complex, on west Lincoln Hwy. behind the McDonald's and Pizza Hut restaurants. Call the Stevens Building Box Office at 753-1600 and ask for the Singles Series Subscription.
