NIU School of Music faculty Liam Teague, Robert Chappell and Orlando Cotto have been invited to tour Taiwan by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. The tour includes concerts at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, one of the premiere concert halls in Asia, the Chang Hwa Cultural Bureau and the Tao Yuan Cultural Center. Also performing in the concerts are NIU School of Music students Wayne Bruno, guitar; Doug Stone, sax; Phil Beale, drum set; and Josh Ramos, bass. Teague is a research scholar in the School of Music and is considered to be one of the finest steelpan players in the world. Chappell is professor of music and head of percussion studies and will play piano, marimba and Indian tabla on the performances. Cotto joined the percussion faculty last year and is a Latin percussionist specialist. Teague and Chappell recently released their first CD together, "For Lack of Better Words." Many of the works on the CD will be featured on the concert tour.

The College of Health and Human Sciences Faculty Award Recipients for 2002 are Sondra King, Ellen Parham and Dianne Cearlock. The awards were presented at a college meeting on Friday, Aug. 23. As part of the nomination process, they were asked to provide their statements of philosophy which can be found in the college's online newsletter at www.chhs.niu.edu/HHS_Dispatch/.

King is the recipient of the CHHS Lankford Award for Excellence in Teaching. She is an associate professor in the School of Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences, and has been a faculty member at NIU since 1978. She was the driving force in the development of the global nutrition course, an interdisciplinary course that meets the non-western/third world requirement for teacher certification.

Parham is the recipient of the CHHS Sullivan Award for Excellence in Research. She is a professor and coordinator of the Dietetics, Nutrition and Food Systems program in the School of Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences, and has been a faculty member at NIU since 1966. Parham has used research effectively in teaching both graduate and undergraduate classes and has helped students come to appreciate the scientific approach used in research.

Cearlock is the recipient of the CHHS Fisher Award for Excellence in Service. She is a professor and coordinator of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences program in the School of Allied Health Professions, and has been a regular faculty member at NIU since 1988. No faculty member has a more consistent and wide-ranging dedication to service both to the university and to their respective professions.
