Call issued for nominations for Presidential Teaching Professorships

All letters of nomination for the 2003 Presidential Teaching Professorships should be submitted no later than Monday, Oct. 21, to Robert Wheeler in the Office of the Provost (Lowden Hall 307). Following receipt of a letter of nomination, the Selection Committee will invite each nominated faculty member to prepare materials in accordance with the published procedure. Only full professors with tenure and at least six years of service at NIU are eligible for the award. The procedure calls for a rigorous and thorough portfolio review including contacting former students. The 2003 recipients will be announced next spring.

Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender History Month activities planned

October is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History Month. Beth Loffreda, author of "Losing Matt Shepard," will kick off the month with a presentation on "Learning from Laramie" at 7 p.m. today in the Holmes Student Center Capitol Room. Customer Support Services offers October short courses

Customer Support Services offers free short courses for faculty, staff, graduate students, students and annuitants during the month of October. National Disability Mentoring Day activities planned

Northern Illinois University Human Resource Services National Disability Mentoring Day is Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002. Invite a student to spend the morning in your department. The student will participate in job shadowing and other activities you and the student choose. This experience allows you and the student a chance to share work experiences involving different capabilities and needs in a workplace setting. This event and forum support and promote HRS/AADR's mission to encourage NIU faculty, students, supportive professional staff and operating staff to become more understanding, knowledgeable and aware of all people and cultures.

Alumni Association seeks award nominations

The Alumni Association is seeking nominations for its 2003 Alumni Awards Program. The program recognizes graduates who have achieved national, regional or statewide prominence either in their professional fields or through their involvement in civic, cultural or charitable activities.   • The Distinguished Alumni Award. The most prestigious award given by the Alumni Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to an alumnus from any of the seven colleges.
  • F.R. Geigle Service Award. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to the best interests of NIU. This award may be given to non-alumni.
  • Outstanding College Alumni Awards. Seven Outstanding College Alumni are chosen to represent the university's seven colleges, highlighting the diverse disciplines of a comprehensive university.
  • Outstanding Young Alumni Award. This award is presented to an alumnus who received his or her undergraduate degree from NIU within the past 10 years.

Faculty, staff invited to join 'NBA'

NIU faculty and staff are invited to join the Noon Ball Association, commonly referred to as "the NBA" by longtime participants. The organized pick-up basketball games run from noon to 1:30 p.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Recreation Center. Courts are reserved specifically for faculty and staff to play during those times. Play is open to all ages and abilities. Call for faculty development grant proposals issued

The Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center is offering grants of up to $2,500 each annually to regular continuing faculty (tenured and tenure track). The purpose of the grants is to encourage and support faculty development activities that directly benefit the applicants' departments, colleges and/or the university. Equal matching from the applicants' academic units or appropriate external sources is required. Five copies of each proposal, including the proposal cover sheet, accompanying letters of support and other relevant documents must be submitted to the Grant Review Subcommittee, Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, by Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, for activities scheduled between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2003. Faculty who plan to submit proposals by the Nov. 8 deadline and need more information are encouraged to register and attend the grant writing seminar that will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Call for SPS grant proposals issued

The Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center and the Office of the President are offering grants up to $1,000 each to Supportive Professional Staff (SPS) pursuing professional development activities that benefit the individuals as well as their academic units. Proposal guidelines and other information is available at http://www.niu.edu/facdev/development/grants.html. Five copies of each proposal, including other relevant documents, must be submitted to the SPS Awards Committee, Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, by Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, for activities proposed between Jan. 1 and June 30, 2003. NIU Faculty/Staff Golf League ends season

The NIU Faculty/Staff Golf League had co-champions this year. The new commissioner will be named later this winter and mailings will go out in the early spring to current members and all departments.

Multicultural Curriculum Transformation task force to hold presentation

The Provost's Task Force on Multicultural Curriculum Transformation will hold its final presentations Oct. 21-31. Spring software installation request deadline set for Oct. 14

Oct. 14 is the deadline for all new software installation requests for student computing labs managed by Information Technology Services. Each request should be accompanied by a signed installation form, verification of licensing, original media and proof of purchase. Requests will be received by the ITS Customer Support Center, 120 Swen Parson Hall. The software installation request form is found at

Prayer Luncheon scheduled for Oct. 15

The NIU Christian Faculty and Staff prayer luncheon will be held from noon to 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the East Room of the Blackhawk Cafeteria. Bring a lunch or purchase one there. All are welcome to attend.

Blood drive scheduled for Oct. 16
