Participants sought for Women's History Month activities

The Women's Studies Program at NIU invites interested university departments, community members and organizations to join in planning activities for the annual celebration of Women's History Month in March 2003.

Women's Studies is seeking proposals for activities such as performances, concerts, films, visual displays, speaking engagements and panel discussions to be held in conjunction with the month-long celebration. Activities may or may not be directly related to the theme of women's volunteerism.

Activity proposal forms are available online at http://www.clas.niu.edu/wstudies/ and should be submitted by Friday, Nov. 8, to: Program Coordinator, Women's Studies Program, Reavis Hall 103, Northern Illinois University.

Topics to be examined during Women's History Month include defining volunteerism, volunteers' contributions to society, volunteerism in other parts of the world and the future of women's volunteerism.

The NIU Women's Studies Program also will recognize outstanding essays by feminist NIU undergraduates and graduate students. Award recipients will be announced during March, with winners receiving cash prizes as well as gift certificates from the University Bookstore.

Essays can be on women's issues or written from a feminist perspective. The deadline for submissions to the Women's Studies Program is noon Monday, Dec. 16.

Women's Studies also is seeking an NIU student artist to design the poster of events for Women's History Month. The artist will receive a $200 commission, sponsored by the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. The final poster will include the student's artwork, photography and/or design. Examples of previous years' posters are displayed in Reavis Hall 103 at NIU. Applications and portfolios should be submitted by Monday, Oct. 28.

For more information, visit the Women's History Month section of the Web site www.clas.niu.edu/wstudies/ or contact the Women's Studies Program at 753-1038.
