NIU's Teaching Effectiveness Institute a success

More than 120 faculty and teaching staff attended the spring 2002 Teaching Effectiveness Institute (TEI), geared to introduce teaching techniques and provide information about support resources related to teaching and accommodating student needs.

The institute, held Jan. 10 and 11, included daylong workshops on "Testing and Grading to Enhance Student Learning" by Virginia Anderson (Towson University), and "Successful Strategies for Implementing High Quality Service Learning" by Andy Furco (University of California at Berkley).

Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center Director Murali Krishnamurthi and Provost Ivan Legg award certificates to participants of the Spring 2002 Teaching Effectiveness Institute.

"This institute was designed to address testing and grading issues as recommended in the report by the Presidential Task Force on Undergraduate Life, and service learning issues as suggested by President Peters in his 2000 State of the University address," said Murali Krishnamurthi, director of the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center.

"Along with inviting nationally-recognized teaching experts to NIU, the institute promotes good teaching and helps faculty engage in a dialogue on teaching," he added.

The TEI was sponsored by the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center and the Provost's Office, with funding from Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers, Inc. and the Illinois Campus Compact.

The institutes are held once every fall and spring. For more information, contact Connie Hanson at 753-3015.
