Nominations sought for Stricklin award
The Presidential Commission on the Status of Women is seeking nominations for the Wilma Stricklin Award for the Enhancement of the Climate for Women on Campus.
This award is presented annually to a member of the NIU community—including faculty, staff, students and alumni—who has been affiliated with NIU for three or more years and has made continual and extraordinary contributions to the climate for women on campus.
The award was named for Wilma Stricklin, who joined NIU in 1976 as chair of the Department of Management. Shortly thereafter, she chaired a committee to review the Title IX program in Intercollegiate Athletics. The resulting `Stricklin Report' established the structure that eventually brought men's and women's athletics at NIU together. When the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women was established in 1981, Stricklin was elected the first chair.
An awards committee appointed by the commission will review nominations and select a recipient. The award will be presented at the Outstanding Women Student Awards Ceremony on Honors Day, Sunday, April 21. Nominations must be made by an NIU employee, student or alumni.
A complete nomination must include the nomination cover form and accompanying statement and two additional letters of support. Only two will be considered, and the letters must be written by members of the operating staff, supportive professional staff or faculty.
For nomination forms, contact Peggy Doherty at 753-1936 or e-mail pdoherty@niu.edu. Return nominations and letters of support, marked confidential, to University Resources for Women, 105 Normal Road, by Friday, March 22. For more information, call 753-0320.
