If you are an NIU student, faculty member, or staff member, and you wish to modify your phone book information you need to login to the Electronic Phone Book in order to make the changes. For a complete description of the Electronic Phone Book, see "Quick Electronic Phone Book".
Usage Notes: It is assumed that you know to press the "Enter" key on your keyboard whenever you finish typing a command or line of text. Occasionally, it may not be clear when to press the "Enter" key, in this case the text: <Enter> is used to aid the reader. In the following document all of the computer prompts that you will see will be indicated through the use of a typewriter font; commands that you will need to type are indicated using bold; and any text which you must provide to a command, will appear in italics.
Once you connect to the NIU Phone Book system (via the link at the end of these instructions), you will be provided with the following prompt:
Now, type the following:
You will next be prompted for a nameserver alias. This is the alias you were assigned by Telecommunications when you first set up your e-mail. It is usually the first letter of your first name, followed by the first seven characters of your last name (e.g., vhuskie).
You will then be prompted for your nameserver password. This will usually be the last six digits of your student identification number (for students) or the last six digits of your Federal ID number (if you are faculty or staff). Your nameserver alias and password can both be changed when you get into the nameserver.
If the logon procedure has been successful, you should now see an "aph>" prompt.
You use the "make" command to modify a particular piece of your personal information which is contained in the electronic phone book. Not all fields are modifiable by yourself, some are only modifiable by authorized personnel. To modify protected fields, such as your name and address, contact the appropriate office (if you are a faculty/staff member call Telecommunications at 963; if you are a student call Registration and Records at 753-0681). For a full discussion of this command and the fields that you may modify, see Quick Electronic Phone Book.
