- Northern Public Radio, NIU’s broadcast arm since 1954, is on the air at 89.5 FM (WNIJ) and 90.5 FM (WNIU). WNIJ offers news and talk, including National Public Radio, while WNIU plays classical music and jazz. Northern Public Radio can be heard on WNIE in Freeport, WNIQ in Sterling and WNIW in LaSalle. Northern Public Radio offers the Northern Illinois Radio Information Service, which reads newspapers, magazines, books and other materials for people with vision impairments.
